ELLSWORTH and BLUE HILL Richard Bryant “Dick” Osgood, 88, died Thurs-day, Aug. 17, 2006, at the Courtland Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Ellsworth. He was born Dec. 19, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of John Howard Osgood and Mary Leila (Coombs) Osgood. Dick graduated from George Stevens Academy and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1933, to serve in World War II. He was stationed in Panama and Europe. Dick was under Gen. Patton and often was his driver. He left the service as a master sergeant with a Bronze Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense Service Medal and Tactical Air Command – American Theater Campaign Ribbon. After being honorably discharged, July 2, 1945, he returned to his hometown of Blue Hill. Dick was a plumber with Babson and Duffy for 40 years. He was a member of the Blue Hill Fire Department for several decades, serving as captain, chief for 14 years, president of the Hancock County Fire Fighter’s Association and senior battalion chief. Some of Dick’s greatest accomplishments were changing the siren, alarm system to the radio activated plectron system, and overseeing the building of the new fire station. He loved the outdoors. He spent numerous November’s deer hunting in and around Blue Hill and Toddy Pond, with the same group of men. Family, fishing, golfing and tomato growing are to be added to the list of life’s enjoyments with plenty of humor and antics. Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Hilda M. (Henderson) Osgood, Collier’s Nursing Home, Ellsworth; a daughter, Joan Rackliffe and her husband, David, of Blue Hill; five grandchildren, Molly (Davey) Judkins of Penobscot, Amy (Clint) Curtis of Penobscot, Catherine Kidney of Blue Hill, David P. Rackliffe and Jody Rackliffe, both of Ellsworth; four great-grandchildren, Deena, Holly, Lily and Chloe Judkins, all of Penobscot; a sister, Helen Butler of Blue Hill; many nieces and nephews, and his adoptive family of the nurses, certified nursing assistants and staff members at the Courtland Nursing Home. He was predeceased by a brother, John Howard Osgood. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Aug. 26, at the Blue Hill Congregational Church, Main Street, Blue Hill, with the Rev. Rob McCall officiating. A reception after the service will be held at the fire department. Contributions in Dick’s memory may be made to the Blue Hill Fire Co., care of George Rolleston, P.O.
