RICHARD CARROLL VARNEY SR. BANGOR and FORT MYERS, Fla. – Richard Carroll Varney Sr., 84, or “Rich” as his friends knew him, passed away March 18, 2008, in Fort Myers, Fla. A native of Bangor, Rich was born Dec. 5, 1923, to the late Lee Mark Varney and the late Margaret Louise Varney. He attended St. Mary’s School and John Bapst High School. As a young man, Rich spent many summers fishing on Moosehead Lake with his longtime friends. Rich “got hitched” to his sweetheart June (Cahoon) Varney, Sept. 3, 1949, at the Lucerne Inn. He worked at Eastern Fine Paper for 42 years, retiring in 1984 to Fort Myers, Fla., to pursue his great love of golf. Rich spent many wonderful years watching his family grow, traveling, rooting on the Red Sox, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, or any of the University of Maine sports teams and honing his craftsmanship of woodworking. Rich was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Mary Varney; and his brother, Williard Varney. He is survived by his sisters, Ruth Varney and Jeannette Chatelain; and his brother, Jerry Varney. Rich will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, June C. Varney; and their children and spouses, Richard C. Varney Jr. and Ann Hackett, Nancy and Carl Renninger, John and Luzia Varney, Lisa and Gary Damaschi. He will be missed dearly by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Sam Varney, Katie Varney, Joshua Varney, Adam and Christy Tucker, Nicholas Tucker, Sean Tucker, Bryanna Renninger, Colin Renninger, Christie and Bryan Tayman, Anne Varney, John Lucas Varney, Isabella Varney, Taylor Damaschi, Connor Damaschi, Brenda Damaschi, Keri Damaschi, Alyssa Gaddis, Ethan Tucker, Regan Tucker, Delaney Tucker, Caleb Tucker, and Aubryanna, Sofia and Josie Tayman. A Mass of Christian burial celebrating Rich’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bangor, with a reception immediately after at the Sea Dog Restaurant. Additionally, a memorial Mass will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at Church of the Resurrection, Fort Myers, Fla., with a reception after at Seven Lakes Pavilion Activity Room. Friends may visit with his family in the church narthex 30 minutes prior to each celebration.
