DALLAS, Texas – Richard M. Stevens, 77, died Oct. 28, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas, after a brief illness. He was born May 8, 1926, in Rockland, a son of Robert A. Stevens Sr. and Maude (Melvin) Stevens. A Navy veteran, he graduated from Rockland High School, Maine Maritime Academy, and the University of Maine, Orono. He spent many years teaching including two years as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Maine, three years at the University of Maryland, four years at Deering High School, Portland, and 11 years at Rockland District High School, Rockland. He was past president of Kiwanis, a member of the Masons and various other organizations. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Estelle Bitler Stevens; three children, Elizabeth Bitler Mates and her husband, Wayne, Charles Bruce Bitler and his wife, MaryAnn, Barbara Bitler Byron and her husband, Bill; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Stevens Jr. and his wife, Dorothy; and five nieces. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. A memorial service will be held in Maine at a later date at the convenience of the family.
