BRADLEY – Robert Benjamin Lobley, 77, died July 2, 2004, at a Bangor hospital from complications following heart surgery. He was born July 29, 1926, in Bangor, a son of Joseph Benjamin and Hazel Louise (Knowles) Lobley. He attended Bangor schools before enlisting with the U.S. Navy in 1944, before graduation. He served in Layte Gulf, Philippines at the end of World War II then served aboard the USS Currituck in Okinawa, Japan. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1947 and immediately joined the U.S. Army Air Corp, and later changed to the U.S. Air Force, and served as a Marine Engineer aboard 85′ Crash Rescue Boats in Maine, Alaska, Korea, Japan, Okinawa, Cape Canaveral, Fla., and then returned to Japan. In 1958, after the end of the Korean War, he transferred to Tyndal Air Force Base in Florida for Tow Target Duty on B-57F aircraft training fighter pilots and gunnery crews for duty in Vietnam. He retired from active duty in 1965 and moved to Waterford, Conn., and was employed at CONO Engineering in Montville, Conn. In 1972 he went to work at the University of Maine in the Chemical Engineering Department. During that time he received his GED and then an associates of science in law enforcement from UMO. He worked part-time as a Penobscot County Deputy Sheriff and was a charter member of the Blue Knight Motorcycle Club. In 1985, he began working for the University of Maine Public safety, retiring in 1993. He also worked part-time at the Bangor Humane Society and as a car transporter for Hertz Rental Car. He was remarried in 1983 to Nancy. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Desjardins) Climo Lobley; three children, David Lobley and his companion, Jeanne Kimberlin, of Rochester, Ind., Joseph Lobley and his wife, Ann, of Waldoboro, John Lobley and his wife, Lisa, of Port Washington, N.Y.; a brother, Vinal Lobley of Brunswick; seven step-children, Deborah Dunnell and her husband, John, of Buxton, Leanna Plucker and her husband, Jeffrey, of Topsham, Laura Rich and her husband, Carl, of Falmouth, Theresa Maxson and her husband, Lewis, of Niagra, Wis., Nancy Climo of Bangor, Anthony Climo and his wife, Vicki, of Johnson City, N.Y., David Climo and his wife, Robin, of Bradley; five grandchildren, Ben, Nicholas, Isabelle, Joseph, and Sam; 17 step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his canine companion, Stormy. He was predeceased by his parents. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Monday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Bradley, with the Rev. Paul Kerns, celebrant. Immediately following the mass all are invited to a luncheon downstairs in the church fellowship hall. Graveside committal services with full military honors will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at the New Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta, ME.
