BAR HARBOR – Robert “Bob” E. Shelton, 85, died peacefully April 12, 2008, surrounded by family, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. He was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Bar Harbor, the son of William R. and Addie (Keezer) E. Shelton. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946, as an aviation machinist’s mate 2nd class on PBY, flying boats, in the American and Asiatic Pacific theaters. Bob met his beloved wife, Eva, while stationed in Fort Worth, Texas. After returning home with his new bride from Texas and working at various jobs, he joined his brothers in the plumbing business. He owned and operated Shelton Brothers Plumbing & Heating and Bar Harbor Sheet Metal Shop. Bob also was the plumbing inspector for the town of Bar Harbor for many years. He was a member of St. Saviour’s Parish, the local Masonic lodge and Anah Temple Shrine. He was a proud member of Shrine Flag Unit, carrying the flag of Eva’s home state of Texas. Bob took great pride in his flower and vegetable gardens at his School Street home. He loved fishing for Atlantic salmon on the Penobscot and Narraguagus Rivers. He mostly enjoyed going on his grandson, Jimmy’s, lobster boat, The Capn. Cole. Bob is survived by three daughters, Sherry Vaughan of Londonderry, N.H., Jan Hanscom and husband, John, of Bar Harbor and Paula Lambert and husband, Butch, of Bar Harbor; seven grandchildren, James, Joy-Lynn and Jay Hanscom of Bar Harbor, Jake and Josh Vaughan and Jessica Daily and husband, Mark, all of North Carolina and Julieanne Vaughan of Boston; five adored great-grandchildren, Hannah Olivia Hanscom, Cassidy Marie Hanscom, James Paul Hanscom, Maxwell Bennet Vaughan and Matthew James Yankowsky; four special young ladies, the mothers of his great-grandchildren, Jasmin Harsy, Ericka Jeffers, Kristina Bennet and Kim Yankowsky; a sister-in-law, Dola Stroder of Fort Worth, Texas; nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eva; three brothers, Charles, William and David Shelton; four sisters, Eleanor Spear, Marguerite Young, Pauline McFarland and Mildred Fields. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church, 41 Mount Desert St., Bar Harbor. Please feel free to attend the service in thanksgiving for Bob’s life and/or the reception in the parish hall after the service. Spring interment will be at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.
