CARIBOU – Robert E. Long Sr., 76, well-known Caribou Policeman and retired Police Chief, died June 14, 2004, at Caribou, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 8, 1928, in Morgantown, W.Va., the son of Elmer and Mabel (Myers) Long Sr. He was a graduate of Morgantown High School as well as the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and the Maine Crime Prevention Institute. He served with the U.S. Air Force as a military police officer during the Korean War. Following his discharge from the military he was employed at Beaulieu’s garage in Caribou, for several years as an auto body repairman. Mr. Long then went on to pursue his career in law enforcement, retiring as Chief of Police for the City of Caribou in 1993. Bob was very fond of the people in Aroostook County and dedicated his life as a police officer to making it a safe place to live and raise a family. He was active in police community outreach programs such as “McGruff the Crime Dog” at the local school as well as the “Mr. Wheely” bike safety program. From Allagash to Mars Hill, Bob spoke to many schools as well as civic and religious organizations on drug abuse. He attended the Caribou United Baptist Church and was a member of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association. Surviving in addition to his wife of more than 51 years, Vivian of Caribou, are two sons, David Long and his wife, Penny, of Mapleton, and Robert Long Jr. and his fianc?e, Stephanie Hyssong, of Owls Head; one brother, Elmer Long Jr. of Gainesville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jessica, Lisa and Tiffany; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Long was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Kathleen; and a brother, Paul. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, from the Caribou United Baptist Church, with the Rev. Fred Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery, Caribou.
