ROBERT J. BLACK SR. CALAIS – Robert J. Black, 62, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Calais. Born Oct. 9, 1941, at Machias, the son of Carlton and Eleanor (Mealey) Black. He was a graduate of Machias Memorial High School, Class of 1959 and the University of Machias in 1963. He taught and coached in the Calais School System for 15 years. Bob retired in 2001 after 30 years of service for the Immigration Naturalization Service. He enjoyed his time as a basketball official. During his retirement he enjoyed lobstering as “Captain Lou’s” first mate. Bob was predeceased by his parents. Surviving are a daughter, Bethany Black of Portland; one son, Robert J. Black Jr. and his wife, Carolee, of Calais; three granddaughters, Breanna J., Chloe M., and Malorie P., all of Calais; one sister, Lucille LaRue and her husband, Ray, of Marshfield; one brother, James Black of Machias; several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be fondly remembered by close friends, Louie, Mike, Huey, and Charlie; also by Jeff, Mary Jean, and family. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3 at the funeral home with the Rev. Dana Kadey officiating. Burial will follow in the Longfellow Cemetery, Machias.
