STEUBEN – Robert Nelson Ohlin, 52, died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Feb. 1, 2004. Rob was born June 14, 1951, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Lloyd and Helen (Hunter) Ohlin. A lifelong interest in the human heart and mind led Rob to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology. From 1991 to the present, he practiced psychology in New Haven, Conn., and Hancock and Washington Counties of Maine. He had a special gift of recognizing the beauty and potential in his friends, family and those he helped through his work. As a young man he became interested in meditation and throughout his life inspired many to pursue spiritual growth. Rob loved the sea from childhood and was an avid swimmer, kayaker, wind-surfer and sailor. As a young man he lobstered out of Point Judith, R.I. He loved Maine and spent many summers on the Isle of Springs near Boothbay Harbor. Later he vacationed with his father and mother in Steuben before permanently moving there in 1998. He was a committed and loyal friend and all who knew him enjoyed the generosity of his love, humor, and optimism. Those graced by his smile will never forget the warmth it conveyed. Rob’s interest in art led him to pursue an undergraduate degree in art at Massachusetts College of Art and Roger Williams College where he specialized in ceramics, sculpture and painting. Later he enjoyed visiting museums and collecting arts. He is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Ann Carney Ohlin; his father, Lloyd Ohlin and stepmother, Elaine Cressey Ohlin; and his sisters, Heather Benda and Janet McCandless. He was predeceased by his mother, Helen (Hunter) Ohlin and his brother, Jor Ohlin. A celebration of honoring and remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004. Celebrants are invited to go directly to the Henry D. Moore Parish House and Library on Village Road in Steuben. There will be a time during the memorial for people to speak or have their thoughts read by another. Following the memorial all are invited to a potluck reception at the family home. In lieu of flowers, donations to conserve the Pigeon Hill Trail and Overlook, a special place for Rob, may be made to the Pigeon Hill Preservation Association, care of Ann Ohlin, 41 Leighton Circle, Steuben, ME 04680.
