SCARBOROUGH – Robert Smart died Saturday evening March 18, 2006, surrounded by those he loved so dearly, his wife and children. He was born in Stratton, the son of Lloyd Patrick and Sibyl Myers Smart. He attended local schools and served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner’s mate third class during the Korean War. He began a lifelong career in construction in the field of drilling and blasting specialist for E.B. White, H. E. Sargent and Maine Drilling and Blasting. His challenges and accomplishments included the original Foxboro Stadium, I-95 from Augusta to Houlton, the Airstrip at Limestone, the Maine Turnpike, the Kangamangus Highway, and the Spaulding Turnpike. During these years he made many friends. He had a great wit and was always “playing jokes” on his fellow workers. Robert was a lifetime member of the BPOE, Dead River Alumni Association. Robert is survived by his wife, Joan; mother, Sibyl; and children, Jerry, (Marguerite), Brian (Maureen) and Robyn (Stephen); three grandsons, Connor, Callaghan and Griffin; his brother, Willis (Anna); and nephews, Robert (Pam) and Bryan (Teri). Visiting hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. Prayers will be recited 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1342 Congress St., Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
