OTISFIELD – Robin Mayo Clifford, 50, of Otisfield, died peacefully at her home on Jan. 9, 2004, after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Robin was a true inspiration during her year and a half battle with ALS, never giving in. Robin was born Feb. 12, 1953, the daughter of Robert E. Mayo and Beverly Sargent Mayo. She grew up in Cheshire, Conn., and Freeport, and later moved to Bangor, where she graduated from Bangor High School in 1971. She then went on to operate a daycare from her home in Portland throughout the 1980’s. In recent years Robin enjoyed the many hours and miles on the road with her husband, Edwin, who was an over the road truck driver. In her spare time she would knit numerous sweaters for her children, grandsons, nieces and nephews. Robin also loved riding with her husband on their Harley Davidson. Robin truly loved life and lived it to its fullest. Those who knew her will always feel blessed that she was a part of their life. Robin had a remarkable gift with people, she never judged anyone and would always help those in need, from the closest family member to a passer-by on the street. Robin was and still is an angel among us. Survivors include her husband, Edwin Clifford; her devoted son, John Luttrell, who, along with Edwin, cared for Robin over the past year and a half; a daughter, Carey Lockard of New Gloucester; stepson, Edwin Clifford of Standish; two grandsons, Robert and David Lockard; her father, Robert Mayo of Portland; brothers, William Mayo of Waterville, Robert Mayo; and sister, Lynn Wiest of Freeport; stepsister, Deborah Roof of Newport; stepbrother, David Smith of Waldoboro; nieces, nephews and their families. Many thanks to Hospice and VNA Services of Portland and Androscoggin County Hospice who granted Robin’s wish of dying at home with dignity, peace and comfort. Also special thanks to Dr. David Johnson and wife, Linda, of Freeport. A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the First Congregational UCC Church of Fryeburg, 655 Main St. The Rev. Jeanett Good and Elaine Armstrong, Androscoggin Hospice Chaplain, will officiate. Burial will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Maine or ALS Association, Northern New England Chapter, 80 Colchester Ave., Burlington, VT 05401.
