MADAWASKA – Rose Martin Michaud, 93, died peacefully during an afternoon nap July 18, 2006. She was born Oct. 26, 1912, in Madawaska, the daughter of Denis and Alphonsine (Raymond) Martin, the third eldest of 15 children. She was married to Edwin Michaud, of Fort Kent and Madawaska, who died in 1971. “Madame Rose”, as she was so fondly called by her many friends, worked a few years each at Ozithe Daigle’s Department Store and Bouchards Clothing Store in Madawaska and also worked for the area Agency on Aging until her retirement. Her greatest pleasure was serving as a Eucharistic minister. She was an active member and past leader of a church cell prayer group. Rose was also very proud to be a member of the Daughter’s of Isabella for more than 50 years, of which she also served as a past regent. She was also a proud member of the Ladies of St. Anne and a past member of the church choir for many years. Roses greatest joys in life were being a great mom and baking breads and other goodies for her family and friends; not only for her own children, but also for the little neighborhood children. She loved cooking and feeding as many people as she could possibly find food for. Rose’s greatest pastimes were playing a variety of card games with her many dear friends and family members. Her favorite, and most challenging, was duplicate bridge, of which she achieved the proud title of Senior Master. Rose was like a second mom to her many dear brothers and sisters, whom she had great lover for. At age 28, in 1940, she married Edwin and became a new mom to his four young children from his first, dearly departed wife. She later became mom to two more children. Deeply saddened by their loss are her children. Surviving are two sons, Theodore “Ted” Michaud, predeceased by his wife, Carmen, of St. Basil, New Brunswick and Guy L. “Ti Guy” Michaud and his wife, Guilmay, of Madawaska; four daughters, Fabiola “Ti Soeur” Matalonis, predeceased by her husband, Robert, of Avondale, Pa., Lorraine Deering, predeceased by her husband, Louis, of Pittsfield, Yvette Morton of Wisconson, Elizabeth Johnson and her husband, Don, of Rochester, N.H.; five grandsons, Michael and Andrew Matalonis, Brian and Steven Morton and Gary Michaud; four granddaughters, Denise Matalonis and Yvette Kondrotas, Julia Friend and Mira Michaud; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is survived by three brothers, Paul, Normand and Raynald Martin, all of Bangor; two sisters, Sister Celine Martin “Therese”, a Sister of Mercy, Portland and Delores Hayes of Austin, Texas; four sisters-in-law, Gurtrude Martin of Newington, Conn., Patricia Martin of Madawaska, Jenny and Patty Martin, both of Bangor; one brother-in-law, Eugene Hayes of Austin, Texas; her dear godchildren; and her many dear nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. Also deeply saddened by their loss are her many dear friends and special little neighborhood children. In addition to her parents, Rose was predeceased by six brothers, Patrick, Armand, Lewis, Onias, Leonard and Adrian; and by three sisters, Marie Mae, Sister Mary Gerard “Rita,” a Sister of Mercy and Raymonde Martin. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Friends and relatives may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday until time of service at Daigle Funeral Home. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Asthma Foundation of America, 1233 20th St. Northwest, Suite 402, Washington, D.C. 20036.
