PRESQUE ISLE – Russell A. Merriam, 66, died Sept. 24, 2004, at a local hospital following a long battle with heart disease and sugar diabetes. He was born July 10, 1938, in Presque Isle, the son of Donald and Margaret (Thompson) Merriam. He was employed as a taxi driver where he met his loving wife of 43 years. He held various jobs until he went to work for Potato Service where he was procurement supervisor until 1982, when his battle with heart disease began. He enjoyed fishing, taking pictures and the great outdoors. He wasn’t a man of many words but we always knew his love of family and friends, were always whole hearted and unconditional as ours is for him. We all felt safe, secured and cherished in his presence and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him until we meet again. He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret; his father, Donald; and a brother, David. He is survived by his loving wife, Irene (Henderson) Merriam of Presque Isle; four sons, Robert, Donald and his wife, Donna, George and special friend, Becky all of Florida; and Russell II and his wife, Karen, of Fort Kent; a daughter, Candace and special friend, Dana, of Presque Isle; his grandchildren, Rose (Merriam) Haskell and her husband, David, of Gardiner, Josh Merriam of Caribou, Jackie, Becka and Jeramey Merriam, all of Florida, Natasha Viel, Brandon Dumais of Fort Kent, including a special “granddaughter,” Stephanie Coffin; one great- granddaughter, Hailey Ann Haskell of Gardiner; two brothers, Gary and his wife, Judith, of Kentucky, Rodney and his wife, Helen, of Presque Isle; a sister, Mary Inglis and her husband, Wayne, of West Warwick, R.I. He will be remembered by special family friends, Kerry and Ken Dickinson of Presque Isle; and best buddy, Lenny Willette. At his request there will be no funeral service. A memorial service will be held for family and friends wishing to attend at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Church of Jesus on Chapman St., with Brother Earl Durost and Bishop Harold Fulton officiating.
