EASTPORT – Ruth Eleanor Dougherty, 80, died Sept. 4, 2004, at her home in Eastport. She was born March 26, 1924, in Eastport, the daughter of Ralph and Beatrice (Watts) Colwell. She graduated from Shead Memorial High School in 1940, and went on to earn her RN from Eastern Maine General Hospital. Ruth served in the Cadet Nurse Corp. during World War II, and spent the rest of her career at the Eastport Memorial Hospital. Ruth was a member of Blakey Memorial United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Pennamaquan Order of the Eastern Star No. 146, and was a Past Chief of Pythian Sisters Seaside Temple No. 59. She will be remembered for her years of kindness and humble service to the sick and needy in the community. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Guy C. Dougherty; a son, William K. Dougherty; a brother, Ralph “Stuffy” Colwell; and sisters, Lillian Dudley, Mildred Good, and Marion Young. She is survived by her daughter Eileen Dougherty; sister, Frances Mitchell; grandchildren, Emily Matthews, Nancy and William Curtis, Averill and Kevin Dougherty, many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at the Blakey Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Henrietta Montjane officiating. Donations in memory of Ruth may be made to the Bakey Memorial United Methodist Church.
