BAR HARBOR – Ruth Estelle Tuck, 96, passed away April 24, 2007, after a long illness in Penobscot. Ruthie was born Jan. 21, 1911, in West Brooks-ville, the daughter of Herbert Roy and Nina Tilson (Lord) Treworgy. In 1928, she was valedictorian at Hallowell High School. Until then, she had spent her summers with her Aunt Eva and Uncle Win Treworgy. When she was 15, they all spent that summer in Brooklyn, N.Y., and sadly that summer her heartthrob, Rudolph Valentino passed away. She was privileged to see another idol of hers point to where his homerun ball was going to end up; and it did. She continued to be an avid baseball fan and her new idol when she passed away was Roger Clemons. After high school, she attended the University of Maine and majored in Latin and minored in French. She was a sorority sister of Alpha Omicron Pi. The one who was later to become her husband interviewed her as a teacher-to-be. Before she graduated she decided to start teaching and within a year, married her superintendent. She became an instant mother to a preschooler, Russell, who adored her until his death. In 1941, before World War II, she was teaching nine grades in West Penobscot. Most of the boys were taller than she. She always loved Penobscot and played the piano for dances there. Her husband also played along with her on his violin. They both loved to dance and were wonderful dancers. Throughout her life she volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, religious education teacher, Red Cross helper, and held several YWCA offices. She was member of the Bar Harbor Literary Club and other organizations. She was a lifelong member of the Congregational Church and the Eastern Star. She will be remembered for having an independent spirit. She drove a car from age 13 to age 76. She didn’t like to cook, but was a very good cook. She loved to eat, especially dessert. She is survived by Russell’s widow, Evangeline and their seven surviving children, Geraldine, Russell Jr., Billy, Olwyn, Jennyne, Renee, and Karen, and their descendants; her older daughter, Eva Hanson, and husband, Bruce and their daughters, Janet, Sandra, and Debra, and their children; her younger daughter’s children, Dana, Barbara Jean, Donna, Diane, Douglas, and Denise, and their descendants; her brother, Robert Lord Treworgy and his wife, Barbara (Tibbetts) Treworgy, of Calais; and their four children and families; several other nieces and nephews; and special friends, Allen and Kathy Patten and Barbara Smith. She was predeceased by her husband, Alonzo Henry Tuck; his son, Russell; her daughter, Marjorie Richards; Russell’s son, Thomas Norman Tuck; and her brothers, Herbert, Scott and Carl Treworgy. A graveside service will be held at Town Hill Cemetery, Somesville, at a later date to be announced. Contributions in her memory may be made to Hancock County Home Care & Hospice, attention Sharon Swift, P.O. Box 156, Blue Hill, ME 04614 or to Bar Harbor Con-gregational Church, 29 Mount Desert St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
