CAMDEN – Sally Mann, wife of the late Dr. David Mann, died at Penobscot Bay Medical Center on Aug. 20, 2004. She was content and surrounded by her family for her final decline and death. Sarah Elizabeth Cunningham was born to Robert and Annie (Nash) Cunningham on Sept. 8, 1917, in Monroe, Va. After the death of her mother in 1919, she was brought up by Mama and Papa Nash, her grandparents. In this new family, her youngest aunt, Suse, became her older sister. Suse Nash Holt died in July 2003. Sally married David Mann in 1938. After he returned from World War II, they moved to Camden where they raised their sons and built friendships and connections that go on to this day. Dave died in 1966. In Sally’s full and productive life, she touched many both personally and professionally. Her career in nursing both in hospitals and privately in Virginia, Boston and Portland and her husband’s medical practice. She is remembered for her outstanding contribution in our local hospitals where she developed and headed the cardio-respiration department until she retired from PBMC. Sally is survived by her sons, Carter Mann of Camden, Eric Mann and his wife, Laurie of Rochester, N.Y.; her “special daughters” Lola Mann of Camden and Nancy Mann of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; her granddaughter, Sarah (Mann) Byrnes and grandson, Michael Byrnes of Rockland; granddaughter, Katherine Mann and grandson, Frank Mann of Rochester, N.Y.; and her cousins, Virginia, Bill, John, Will, Alice and Betty of Virginia. There are many friends who have been so much a part of her life that they feel like family including Jeff Conrad, Jan Conrad and Rebecca Gene Conrad. There will be a Requium Eucharist celebrating the life of Sally at 2 p.m. Aug. 25, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden. Memorial donations to a fund run by Sally’s beloved Roger Marshall to help Vietnam amputees would greatly please her.
