MACHIAS – Shirley G. Hoyt, 66, passed away Oct. 31, 2004, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Her longtime companion and friend, Keith Smith, was by her side. She was born Aug. 16, 1938, in Machias, the daughter of the late Frank and Miran (Cook) Hoyt. She attended school in East Machias and graduated from Washington Academy in 1957. She worked as a secretary for Winslow Longfellow Agency and in 1961 worked at the Down East 5 & 10 until it closed in July 2000. Shirley belonged to the East Machias Historical Society. She enjoyed genealogy and loved the outdoors and working in her flower garden. Shirley is survived by special friend, Keith Smith; one aunt; Marie Woodman of Machias; cousins, Phyllis McConkey of Naples, Harriet Osgood of Mechanic Falls, Elsie Bryant of Jacksonville, Galen Woodman of Pembroke, Alden Woodman of Jacksonville, and Carolyn Sprague of Machias. She was predeceased by her parents; and a half brother, Arthur “Buster” Hoyt. Cremation arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias.
