SURRY and SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Stanton Garfield Jr., “Tony,” 80, former Blue Hill resident and longtime mathematics teacher at George Stevens Academy, died March 23, 2006, in North Carolina as the result of an automobile accident. His wife, Norma, was injured in the head-on collision and is recovering in a North Carolina hospital. Garfield, the great-grandson of U.S. President James A. Garfield, was born Oct. 22, 1925, in New York City, N.Y. and grew up in Concord, Mass. He saw Lou Gehrig play in Fenway Park in 1935. After graduating from Harvard, he taught at the McTernan School in Connecticut, the Fenn School in Massachusetts and Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, where he also coached varsity football. Garfield moved to Blue Hill with his children and first wife in 1967, and taught at George Stevens Academy until his retirement in 1988. A summer resident of Deer Isle before the move to Blue Hill, he enjoyed sailing and golf and was an avid fan of Boston professional sports teams. After his retirement, he and Norma lived in Cranbrook, British Columbia; Spokane, Wash.; and Southern Pines, N.C. Tony and Norma maintained a summer camp on Toddy Pond in Surry, where they enjoyed canoeing, gardening, entertaining friends and family, and watching sunsets over the lake. Garfield is survived by his wife, Norma of Surry and Southern Pines, N.C.; and by his five children, Henry Garfield of Blue Hill, Maggie Overton of Sedgwick, Tiz Jordan and Martha Garfield of Dedham and Kate Garfield of Port Townsend, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Polaris and Rigel Garfield, Cade and Laura Overton, Sara and Teresa Jordan and Ella Wiegers. He is also survived by two brothers and their wives, George and Nancy of Houston, Texas and John and Sylvia of West Lebanon, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in 1987 by a sister, Mary. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Powell’s Funeral Home, Southern Pines, N.C.
