STELLA ‘SHIRLEY’ CHASE MAPLETON – Stella L. Chase, 91, went home to be with the Lord, Dec. 25, 2003. She was born Sept. 2, 1912, in Chapman, the daughter of the late Harry and Lizzie (Grendell) Hudson. Mrs. Chase was a member of the United Baptist Church in Mapleton, but also faithfully attended the East Mapleton Advent Christian Church in Sleepy Hollow. She will be remembered for her passion for life, her wit and sense of humor. Her gift of making people laugh was remarkable. She carried her harmonica with her everywhere she went and never missed an opportunity to play it. She and her late husband, Wallace, entertained many people with their music including church and radio. She was an avid dancer and loved to sing and play old hymns. Until recently, you would see her out every Saturday night at Camper’s Paradise in Westfield. Mrs. Chase attended schools in Mapleton and Chapman. She not only was a devoted mother and great cook, but she loved to garden and pick strawberries. She worked during harvest until she was in her sixties. Many of her years were spent working for Northern National Bank as a “domestic engineer.” Mrs. Chase earned her PhD living life to the fullest every day. The happiest time in her life was when she was raising children. She is survived by her son, Richard W. Chase and his wife, Anita, of Lugoff, S.C.; her son, Philip L. Chase and his wife, Elizabeth, of Vass, N.C.; and her daughter, Sherry Miller-Thibodeau and her husband, Robert, of Presque Isle. Grammie Chase has nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also has several nieces and nephews. She will be fondly remembered by her faithful companion Elwood “Woody” Jewell. Stella was predeceased by her husband, Wallace H.
