ROANOKE, Va., and ELLSWORTH – Sybil Gordon Linscott, 95, died Jan. 26, 2008, at Summerville Ridgewood care facility, Salem, Va. She was born May 7, 1912, in North Sullivan, daughter of Archie O. and Ella Cummings Bunker. Deteriorating health required her to move from Ellsworth to Roanoke, Va., to be cared for by her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Hilton L. Fowler. Her 38-year teaching career in the Ellsworth school system began in 1933, after her graduation from Sullivan High School and Castine Normal School. She later received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Maine and took graduate courses there. She served as principal of Park Street Elementary School, Ellsworth, for 15 years. Future teachers were grateful for the practical experience they received in her second grade class room. She retired from teaching in 1972. Sybil was a charter member and served as president of Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the National Honorary Teachers Society. She had been a member of Maine Principals Association, Hancock County Principals Association and Ellsworth Parent-Teachers Association. Sybil is survived by her husband, William B. Linscott of Ellsworth, whom she married in 1975; her beloved daughter, Jacqueline and her husband, Hilton L. Fowler, M.D., of Roanoke, Va.; her beloved granddaughter, Lisa Fowler Gates and husband, Col. Francis K. Gates III, retired, of Hampton, Va.; stepdaughter, Marjory Linscott Backman of Portland; stepson, William Linscott Jr. and his wife, Elgene, of Clarksville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews, and four stepgrandchildren. She was predeceased in 1971 by her husband of 36 years, Elbridge W. Gordon. She was also predeceased by her brother, Cecil Bunker of Sullivan; and her sisters, Phyllis B. Harper, Nathalie Dow and Olive Jackson Bunker of Ellsworth. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
