PRESQUE ISLE – Sylvia M. Long, 83, died Jan. 19, 2005, at a Presque Isle hospital. She was born March 21, 1921, in Grand Isle, Maine, the daughter of Firmin and Alvina (Bouchard) Chasse. Mrs. Long worked at the Northern Maine Sanatorium in Presque Isle as a clerk in the Chest Clinic of the Out Patient Department from 1948 to 1961. The clinic was then transferred to Gould Hospital. Mrs. Long was a charter member of the Maine State Employees Association. She served three years as President of the Presque Isle Nursing Home Volunteers and was a member of RSVP. She was also a member of the Mary Magdalene Daughters of Isabella, Chapter 639 since 1952, a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 02599. The DAV unit No. 010, St. Mary’s Social Action; a charter member of St. Mary’s Temporary Shelter for the Homeless, Inc. Mrs. Long was also a charter member of L’association Culturelle et Historique du Mont Carmel at Lille, Maine. She was an Eucharistic minister for St. Mary’s Parish, taking Communion to the sick and shut-ins. She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence, Oct. 21, 2001; one brother, Roland; two sisters, Therese and Adrienne. She is survived by a stepson, Gerald Long and his wife, Marlene, of Plantsville, Conn.; and their daughters, Margaret and Susan of Bristol, Conn.; one brother, Raoul and his wife, Jeannette, of Grand Isle, Maine; two sisters, Lorraine Cyr of Hartford, Conn. and Dolores Dugal of Madawaska; one special sister-in-law, Geraldine Chasse, of Manchester, Conn.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews, cousins and many dear friends. All her life Mrs. Long kept close to her heart her baptismal God-Parents and her late uncle and aunt, Philippe and Agnes (Beaulieu) Chasse. Relatives and friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Presque Isle. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at the church with Rev. Alfred Irving celebrant. Relatives and friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of service Friday at the Church. Spring interment will be in St. Mary’s North Main Street Cemetery.
