NEWPORT – Thelma L. Hawthorne, 73, died peacefully Nov. 28, 2004, at her son’s home in Newport. She was born Nov. 19, 1931, in Newport the daughter of George L. and Lena E. (Ferry) Patchell. Thelma attended Newport schools and was a 1949 graduate of Newport High School. She married Earl R. Hawthorne in Newport March 5, 1949. They made their home in Newport except for the past 15 years when they spent the winters in Haines City, Fla. Thelma was an active member of the High Street Congregational Church in Newport where she was a member of the UBB’s and the editor the church paper the “Belfry Buzz” for many years. She was active in the Newport Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Scholarship Committee for firemen’s children. She was also a long time member of the Newport High School Alumni Scholarship Committee. Thelma is survived by her husband of 55 years, Earl R. Hawthorne of Newport; two sons and their wives, Aaron and Lorraine Hawthorne of Newport, Wayne and Renee Hawthorne of Detroit; two daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Larry Downs of Newport, Karen and Shawn Smith of Sandy Point; eight grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, George Jr., Paul; and a sister, Pauline. Memorial services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at the High Street Congregational Church with Pastor Al Worden officiating.
