PALMYRA – Truman George Fowler, 83, died peacefully Jan. 9, 2008, with his son and daughter at his bedside, after a courageous battle with cancer, at his home. He was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Milford, the son of Truman H. and R. Ruth (White) Fowler. He attended Milford and Old Town schools. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was wounded during the D-Day invasion and received a Purple Heart for combat injuries. After World War II, he finished his high school education and attended and graduated from Bowdoin College. He started his teaching career at Hartland Academy, teaching math and driver education, and retired from Nokomis Regional High School with more than 35 years of service to MSAD 48. He was married to Elizabeth “Betty” Fowler for 35 years. She predeceased him in 1993. He and Betty owned and operated the Butterfly Boutique, Palmyra, for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Maine Teachers Association and the MSAD 48 Teachers Association. He established Boy Scout Troop 486, Palmyra, and served as the first Scoutmaster for several years. He was an avid gardener, bird watcher, fisherman and outdoorsman. He is survived by three sons, Jordan T. Fowler of Massachusetts, James Chase and his wife, Jean, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Dean Chase of Palmyra; one daughter and her husband, Dena and Glenn Worster of Palmyra; one brother, Leslie Fowler of California; 14 grandchildren, Serena, Michael, Melissa, Jewel, Kristy, James Jr., Sarah, Heath, Becky, Laura, Danielle, Edward, Billie-Jo and Greg; 21 great-grandchildren, several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be remembered by a lifelong friend, Rita Doucette; many friends, colleagues and former students. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his son, Merrill Chase; and his brother, Hollis Fowler. At his request there are no public visitations or services. A graveside service will be conducted in the spring at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town. Friends who wish, may make memorial donations to a scholarship fund to be established in his name to be given to Palmyra graduates of Nokomis Regional High.
