EAST MILLINOCKET and HOULTON – Vaughn Frank Byron, 82, died Sunday morning, Nov. 26, 2006, with his family by his side at an area nursing home. He was born Oct. 24, 1924, in Linneus, the son of Frank and Annie (Knox) Byron. Vaughn was proud of his service in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was in the Fifth Cannon Company of the 351st Infantry Regiment. While in the U.S. Army, he received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and Victory Medal. He married Phyllis Colter Sept. 19, 1947. Vaughn was a self-employed contractor for more than 20 years and later was employed by the Department of Transportation. Vaughn will always be remembered for his vibrant personality and wit, his contagious laughter and his words of encouragement. His life revolved around his family and he enjoyed traveling, fishing and camping. He was a member of the American Legion. Vaughn will be sadly missed by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Byron of East Millinocket; daughters and husbands, Cheryl and John Platek of Kensington, Conn., Debbie and Dan McCann of Houlton and Beth and Stewart Atwood of Machais; sons and wives, Ronald and Carmen Byron of Overland Park, Kan., Gary and Linda Byron of Dunkirk, Ind., and Dan and Linda Byron of East Millinocket; his loving grandchildren, Brittney Platek, Dustin McCann, Byron Atwood, Parker and Bradley Byron, Nicole, Kristen and Laura Byron, Eric Taylor, Anik Couturier and Chris Byron; and two great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Ben. A special thank you to the staff of Colonial Nursing Home, Lincoln for their compassionate care and thoughtful attention to all members of the family. Friends may attend the service and celebration of life 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Baptist Church, Oak Street, East Millinocket, with the Rev. Harold Lovestrand officiating.
