MARSHFIELD – Verlyn (Dawes) Wood was called to the home of her Lord and Savior, to be with him, June 15, 2006. She was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Jonesport, to her loving parents, Austin L. and Sylvia (Thompson) Dawes. She graduated from Jonesport High School, Class of 1934. She met her true soul mate and the love of her life, Maynard S. Wood, of Machias and they were married Oct. 12, 1935. They were blessed with three devoted children, Sandra Ridlon of Marshfield, Austin-Willis Wood of East Machias and Candi-Jo Broomhall and her husband, Bill, of Brunswick; one granddaughter, Jennifer Anthony; and one great-grandson, Kyle-Wayne Cushman, both of Old Orchard Beach. Maynard and Verlyn owned and operated several businesses in the Portland, Jonesport and Machias areas, which included, The Log Cabin Restaurant in South Portland, Wood’s Sunoco in Jonesport, Wood’s Chevron in Redbank and Wood’s Auto Repair in Machias. In 1995, they sold the family homestead, in Machias, to Rite Aid and moved to Marshfield to retire. She was a devoted member of The Community of Christ for many years. In addition to those already mentioned, she leaves behind special nieces and nephews, Almon Emerson and his wife, Nancy, Eugene Dawes and his friend, Rose Nuttall, Lebert Emerson and his wife, Mary, Derwin Emerson and his wife, Doreen, Charlee Davis and her husband, Mac, Janalene Oakes and her husband, Henry, Austin Perry and his wife, Gail, and Joan Libby and her husband, Breen. She also leaves behind many other nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins. She will be sadly missed by lifelong friends, Olive Healey of Machias and Doralies Sawyer of Jonesport. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Sylvia and Austin; brother, Charlie; and sisters, Violet Perry and Bertha Britting. After cremation, funeral services will be announced, with the elder of The Community of Christ, Dona Emerson presiding.
