BRIDGEWATER and WESTBROOK – Virginia Lee Welch, 91, died Friday, May 4, 2007, at Springbrook Health Care Facility, Westbrook. She was born March 28, 1916, in Bridgewater, the daughter of Bernard and Lora Grindell Welch. She lived her entire life in Bridgewater, which she loved, until illness drew her to Portland and then Westbrook to be closer to her son and family. Virginia’s colorful personality and independent spirit were legendary to all who knew her. She was an accomplished pianist and piano teacher for many years. Virginia was a longtime Baptist who drew strength and courage from her faith. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Margaret Welch of Westbrook; four grandchildren, Wade and his wife, Lisa Welch, of Old Town, Heather Cyr and her husband, Rob, of Old Town, Matthew Welch and fianc?e, Chloe Zaug, of Boston and Laura Welch and fianc?, Jay Bosse, of Brooklyn, N.Y. She also leaves behind a niece, Joyce Wilder of Presque Isle; a nephew, Wayne and his wife, Loretta Hutchinson, of Pennsylvania; a cousin, Barbara Swimm of Monticello, 10 great-grandchildren, several great-nieces and great-nephews. The family is grateful to the dedicated and loving staff at Springbrook, who became like an extended family to Virginia. Her roommate, Helen Fontaine, was a loyal and dear friend. A visiting hour will be held 2-3 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Duncan Funeral Home, Mars Hill. Funeral services will be held after with the Rev. Mark Hartley officiating. Interment will be at Smith Cemetery, Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers those who wish may make a donation to a children’s charity of their choice in her memory.
