ORRINGTON – Walter C. Hurd, 77, died May 23, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 22, 1929, in South Orrington, the son of William and Ruth (Robinson) Stubbs. Walter graduated from Brewer High School in 1946 and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was commander of the VFW Post No. 4527, Orrington; member of Ralph J. Pollard Lodge No. 217 AF & AM, Orrington; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Bangor; Maine Consistory; Anah Shriners, where he served with the Arab Patrol for 16 years and member and past captain of the go-cart unit for 10 years. Walter was a troop greeter at Bangor International Airport and a member of the FUMCO singers of the First United Methodist Church of Orrington. He enjoyed many years of retirement after working as office manager for Brake Service. Walter will be lovingly missed by his beloved wife of 54 years, Shirley (Brown) Hurd of Orrington; three children and their spouses, Jan and Ted Kimball, Dale and Tim Quimby all of Orrington, Craig Hurd of Rockland; five grandchildren, Nick and Katie Kimball, Erin Quimby and his fiance, Mary Gierhan, Alyssa Quimby, Connor Hurd; stepmother, Verna Hurd of Bucksport and family; “adopted daughter,” Diana Collins; several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; special friends, Charlotte and Gilbert Betts, Alice Ingraham; and “extended family,” Laurie and John Goupee, Debbie and Tom Smiley. Walter was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor Cookson and Maxine Hathorn. Friends may call 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where a VFW memorial service will be held noon by the VFW Post No. 4527 officers and members. Interment will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, Orrington with the Rev. Richard R. Noyes, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Orrington, officiating.
