MONTVILLE – Wayne “Handiman” St. Clair passed away Aug. 3, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. Wayne was born May 27, 1949, in Rockland. Wayne began his life in Thomaston and as a late teen met his “bride,” Barbara (Eggen) St. Clair. They moved to Rhode Island for a brief time and then made their residence in Montville in 1975. Wayne worked at Reicheld Motors in Rockland and continued his employment with them when they opened Volkswagen Village in Rhode Island. Upon returning to Maine, he and Barbara purchased “The Store,” now known as Liberty Trading Post. He and Barbara ran the store for several years making a lot of friends through the years. He started out driving the mail as a substitute for Maurice Benner and in 1988, he sold the store and delivered mail full time. Wayne was a member of the Liberty Masonic Lodge No. 111 and recently received his 25-year pin. He was also an Anah Shrine member. He was very proud to be an active member of the Masons and loved his “brothers” dearly. Wayne was a handyman. There wasn’t much he couldn’t fix or build. If anyone had trouble fixing something, they always could count on the Handiman to help. He and Barbara took great care and maintained the St. Clair ball field and were very active in the lives of their grandchildren. It was common to see Wayne plowing driveways and lending a helping hand. Wayne could be seen at Wiscasset Raceway on Saturday nights the last 17 years, greeting customers and doing security. Wayne maintained the Liberty Inn for the Horowitz family for many years. Wayne enjoyed boating, racing, fishing and friends. You could stop at the Liberty Post Office on any given day and see the friends Wayne had made. He always took time on his mail route to converse and be everyone’s favorite mailman. Wayne enjoyed mornings in the post office with Roxanne and Dave. He was extremely close with his brothers, David and Will; and his best friend, Dave. He will be sadly missed by his dog, Shadow; and special friends and neighbors, Brian and Tootsie Jackson. Wayne is survived by his bride of 38 years, Barbara Ann, or “Annie” as he called her; his brother, David and wife, Sandra St. Clair, of Liberty, William and wife, Barbara, of Montville, Paul and wife, Valerie, of Auburn; parents, Arthur St. Clair of Farmington and Florence St. Clair of Montville. Wayne had two special godchildren, Puncin and wife, Kerri, of Liberty and Tammy and husband, Jerry, of Liberty; six wonderful grandchildren, Joshua, Cassandra, Jordan, Mercedes, Ryan and Ashton. Wayne had several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and a community of friends. Family and friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast where a funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Wayne’s memory to The Salvation Army, 615 Slaters Lane, Alexandria, VA 22314.
