HOWLAND – Wayne S. Packard, 79, died Aug. 23, 2006, at a Howland health-care facility. He was born March 28, 1927, in Hancock. He was a graduate of Howland High School, Class of 1944. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations from 1945 to 1947. He attained the rank of sergeant as a department head at the headquarters of a disciplinary training center in Italy. He graduated from Husson College, majoring in business education and did advance degree work at the University of Maine. He was a member of Mu Sigma Chi and Kappa Delta Phi fraternities. He set the business department up at Walker High School in Liberty and after consolidation finished his teaching career at Mount View High School in MSAD No. 3, retiring from teaching in 1978. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 58 in Thorndike and also served on the board of directors of the Penobscot Valley Kennel Club. Wayne was also a member of The American Legion, Post 178, of Waterville. Two of his greatest pleasures were riding horses and showing his dogs. He loved his family very much and enjoyed doing things with them and for them. He was highly respected as a schoolteacher by his students and staff as well as all who knew him. He was predeceased by his parents, Oveid B. and Marie (Grant) Packard; and his brother, Verle A. Packard, all of Howland. He is survived by his two sisters, Joyce Drost and her husband, Duane, of West Enfield, Carol Kearney and her husband, Raymond, of Howland; two nephews, Kevin Drost and his wife, Cindy, of Lincoln, Kenton and his wife, Lorna, of Howland; four nieces, Janna Whitney and her husband, Kirby, of Chester, Tammy Whitney and her husband, Blaine, of Corinth, Jolayne Mason and her husband, Scott, of Howland, Tetia Hanscom and her husband, Nathaniel, of Enfield; several great-nephews and great-nieces; a very special friend and colleague, George Merry of Smithfield. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Dona-tions can be left at the funeral home.
