ELLSWORTH – Wendell Leo-nard Esterberg, 92, died July 18, 2008, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born Sept. 19, 1915, in Reading, Mass., the son of William L. and Anna (Brown) Esterberg. Wendell graduated from Reading High School and attended Boston University for business administration. He served in the U.S. Navy as a quartermaster, third class, in the Pacific. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal and Philippine Liberation Medal. His sales career started at Jones, McDuffy & Stratton, Boston, and Monarch Marking System Co. In 1945 returning from the service, he worked at IGA, ElIsworth, operated by his father-in-law, Charles Joy. He also worked briefly at Liberty National Bank and Ellsworth Builders Supply. For 30 years he worked at Wholesale Distributors for Ben Hinckley. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, music, landscaping and collecting rocks. He is survived by his daughters, Joy Esterberg of New York City, Karen Coombs and husband, Ernest, of Northeast Har-bor and Gail Esterberg Royal of Southwest Harbor; grandchildren, Michael Gordon and wife, Lynette, William Gordon and wife, Minh, Tracy Hanulec and Benjamin Royal; stepgrandchildren, Steve, Bobby, David, Sandra, Cindy and Lynn; several great-grandchil-dren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Leta (Joy); and a sister, Ruth Esterberg Dalton. Calling hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 25.
