LOWELL and LINCOLN Wesley F. Shorey, 80, died Aug. 23, 2008, at a New York hospital, after extended complications of open heart surgery. He was born April 21, 1928, in Enfield, the first of seven children to Samuel T. and Frances (Smith) Shorey. He attended schools in Lowell and graduated from Lee Academy and Aroostook State Normal School, Presque Isle. He taught school in Masardis, Orrington, Searsport, Islesboro, Winn, Stratton, Mattawamkeag and retired from teaching while at Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, in 1972, due to health problems. Wesley was a 60-year active member and past master of Escutarsis Grange, Lowell; member and past secretary of Ammadamast Grange, Enfield; Maine State Grange, as stage manager; member of Twin Town Lowell/Burlington Senior Citizens; and the Maine Teachers Association. He had been a dedicated Boy Scout Leader and worked at Camp Roosevelt for many summers, where a craft building was named in his honor. Wesley’s hobbies included crafts, reading, watching movies, tapes and anything electronic; also all the volunteer work with the Grange and Scouts, and community service. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Alta Barker; sisters-in-law, Della Shorey and Ann Shorey; and brother-in-law, Carlton Lane. He is survived by three sisters, Lorraine and her husband, George Jipson, of Lowell, Donna and her husband, Doug McCafferty, of Mattawamkeag and Georgia Lane of East Holden; two brothers, Samuel F. Shorey, of D’Iberville, Miss., and Elton and his wife, Susan Shorey, of Orono; a brother-in-law, Clifton Barker of Lincoln; many cousins, nieces and nephews. At Wesley’s request, there will be no funeral service. A graveside memorial service will be held in Lowell at a later date to be announced.
