BELFAST – William A. Hanscom, 62, passed away Aug. 14, 2008, from complications of breast cancer after an 11-year battle. He was born Sept. 5, 1945, in Bar Harbor, the second son of E. Colon and Alice C. (MacDonald) Hanscom. In June 1963, Bill graduated from Bar Harbor High School and Washington State College, Machias, in 1967. He received his master’s degree in education from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1977, concentrating in elementary administration. Bill’s teaching stations included two years at Fort Street School, Mars Hill; four years at Pine Street School, Presque Isle; and 23 years in the Belfast school system. His last seven years in education was as a supervisory elementary principal in Frankfort and Stockton Springs. During this time, Bill belonged to all the local and national teacher and administrative organizations. He also was a former member of Belfast Curling Club, Northport Golf Club, Searsport Golf Club and served on the board of directors of Waldo County YMCA. Bill’s favorite pastime was raising, training and racing Standardbred harness race horses. His two most successful horses were Coastal Kim and Sherry Bell. He was a member of the United States Trotting Association, Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association, Maine State Harness Racing Association and the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association. Bill was a member of Belfast Lodge No. 24 AF & AM, Royal Arch Masons, Palestine Commandry No. 14, K.T., Anah Shrine and Primrose Chapter No. 152, Order of the Eastern Star. He was also past patron of Primrose Chapter and served a term as grand representative to the state of Washington. Bill was predeceased by his parents; and one brother, Kenneth, of Center Barnstead, N.H. Surviving is his best friend and wife of 40 years, Barbara of Belfast; a daughter, Kimberly Bradeen and her husband, Ben, and two granddaughters, Kaylen Elizabeth and Kilee Morgan Bradeen, all of Bradley; his mother-in-law, Arlene Whitney of Belfast; two brothers, John Hanscom and his wife, Jan, of Bar Harbor and Richard Hanscom of South Bend, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Terry Whitney and his wife, Roxie, of Morrill; a sister-in-law, Gaynor Whitney of Belfast; a sister-in-law, Patricia Fournier of Center Barnsted, N.H.; several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at First Baptist Church, 95 High St., Belfast, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. The Rev. Patricia Parker will officiate. There will be a reception held at the church after the service. Interment will be afterward at Grove Cemetery, Belfast. Due to a family allergy, please omit flowers.
