CALAIS – William E. Demmons, 77, died March 11, 2004, at the home of his son in Robbinston. He was born April 2, 1926, at Jacksonville, the son of Thomas and Edna (Bryant) Demmons. Gene was a World War II veteran, serving both the Merchant Marine and the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Sherman Brothers Post No. 3 American Legion of Calais, and the Second Baptist Church of Calais. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and had a great love for horses and horse shows. He enjoyed country gospel music and had a great gift for woodworking. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Pauline (Haney) Demmons in 2001; his father; one brother; one sister; two stepbrothers; and one stepsister. Surviving are his mother, Edna Greenlaw of Calais; a son, Wayne Demmons and his wife, Jonelle, of Robbinston; a daughter, Sharon Waycott and her husband, Paul, of Calais; a brother, Lester Greenlaw and his wife, Liz, of Wisconsin; a sister, Betty Ahlquist and her husband, Earle, of Scarborough; seven grandchildren, Heather, Heidi, Jesse, Amber, Billy, Wade and Jessica; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his special friends, Calla Sue Bean and Marguerite Graham; and his faithful companion, Lacey Dawn. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home, Calais. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home by the Rev. William Lee assisted by Mr. James Walton. Burial with military honors will follow in Calais Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be sent to the Second Baptist Church of Calais.
