DOVER-FOXCROFT – Dennis Herbert Allen, 54, loving husband of Bonnie (Philbrook) Allen, died unexpectedly Sept. 30, 2008, at his home. Dennis was passionate about health care finance, but he was in no way a colorless bean counter. The hallmark of his management style was a devastating, bone-dry sense of humor that continually caught his colleagues off guard. Dennis was born Oct. 8, 1953, at Eastern Maine General Hospital, Bangor, son of Carroll and Geneva (Somers) Allen of Hampden. He graduated from Hampden Academy in 1971; received his Bachelor of Business degree from the University of Maine, Machias, in 1975; Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1986; Certified Management Accountant in October 1989; and his Certified Management of Patient Accounts. Dennis was employed for three years at Eastern Maine Medical Center and took the chief financial officer position at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft, in 1978, remaining there for the remainder of his career. Dennis received many awards during his career: the Follmer Bronze Merit Award, 1989; the Reeves Silver Merit Award, 1995; and the Muncie Gold Merit Award, 1999. Dennis was active in his profession and in the Dover-Foxcroft community. He was a member of Health Finance Management Association, Maine Hospital Association Committees and Maine Health Alliance. Civic involvement included Piscataquis Regional YMCA Board of Directors, Pine Crest Business Park board, and Dover and Foxcroft Water District Board of Trustees. His passions in life, in addition to his wife, were fishing, golfing, hiking and traveling. He is survived by Bonnie, his wife and soul mate of 20 years; parents, Geneva and Carroll Allen of Hampden; mother-in-law, Sonja Philbrook; brothers, Edward and his wife, Lorraine and Roy and his wife, Tracey; a sister, Brenda Badger and her husband, Phil; sisters-in-law, Darlene Nye and her husband, Gary and Lynn Osborn and her husband, Darren; brother-in-law, Raymond Philbrook; nieces, Kelly Badger, Andrea and Sierra Nye, Alexandria “Lexi” and Samantha Philbrook; nephews, Justin and Benjamin Allen, Seth Dow and Austin Osborn; aunts and uncles, Charlene Clark and her husband, Merland and Marjorie “Mugs” Saunders and her husband, Bill. Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church, with Dr. Rev. Dodie Sheffield officiating. After the service all are invited to share fellowship and refreshment 2-4 p.m. at Abel Blood’s Pub, Main Street, Dover-Foxcroft. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Mayo Regional Hospital, 897 W. Main St., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426 or the American Heart Association, 51 US Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074.
