PORTLAND, Maine — The two candidates in Maine’s 1st District congressional race say they oppose the Wall Street bailout bill that was rejected by the House on Monday and then amended and passed by the Senate two days later.
Democrat Chellie Pingree and Republican Charlie Summers say the $700 billion measure does not do enough to protect taxpayers and prevent a similar financial crisis in the future.
The candidates outlined their positions as House members prepared to take up the issue again on Friday.
Pingree and Summers are seeking the seat being vacated by Democrat Tom Allen, who voted in favor of the rescue plan Monday. Maine’s other congressman, Democrat Michael Michaud, opposed the bill.
