MILLINOCKET and OCALA, Fla. – Ruth Virginia Campbell, 82, formerly of Millinocket and Traverse City, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at a Bangor hospital, shortly after attending a family reunion in Maine. Ruth resided in Millinocket until she enlisted in the WAF, Women’s Air Force, in early January 1951. She retired from the military, July 31, 1973, after serving more than 22 years. She moved to Traverse City, Mich., after retirement and worked at Bethany Baptist Church for more than 18 years. In 2002 Ruth moved to Ocala, Fla., where she shared her life with her companion dog, Miss Muffett. She was a life member of the Air Force Sergeant Association, Chapter No. 772 of Michigan, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans’, Chapter No. 38 of Traverse City, Mich., and a member of Stearns High School Alumni Association of Millinocket. Ruth is survived by two sisters, Geneva Hangsterfer and her husband, Charles, of Doylestown, Pa., and Margaret Evers and her husband, John, of Millinocket; along with eight nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Rufus and Margaret (Crandall) Campbell; a brother, Edward Campbell; and sisters, Ida Davis and Lucille Taylor. Graveside funeral services with military honors will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Millinocket Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket.
