BASS HARBOR – Clyde F. Carter, 59, of Tremont, died unexpectedly Oct. 10, 2008. He was born May 20, 1949, in Bar Harbor, the son of Lawrence and Doris (Levesque) Carter. Clyde was one of eight children and never lacked for a playmate. After living briefly in Massachusetts as a teenager, Clyde returned to his hometown, where in 1967 he married Phyllis “Tillie” Hamblen and they made their home in Tremont with their three daughters. He had a great passion for antique cars and made many lifelong friends through his years of involvement with Coastal Antique Car Club. He enjoyed being on the water and will be sadly missed by his many fisherman friends. Many of his summers were spent mostly at camp on Georges Pond, surrounded by close friends and family, and many great memories were made there. Clyde will be remembered by many as a local Santa Claus, using much of his own time and money for presents to many, many households; just to see the smiles on the children’s faces as they saw Santa climbing down from the fire truck with a sack full of presents to put under the tree. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Tillie Carter; three daughters, Lorraine Peterson and husband, Keith, of Seal Cove, Michelle Carter of Southwest Harbor and Kari Seavey and husband, Austin, of Seal Cove; brothers, Lawrence Jr. of Ellsworth and Steven and wife, Kellie, of Bass Harbor; sisters, Priscilla Hunt of Florida, Carol Hamblen and husband, Robert, of Southwest Harbor, Marion Herrick and husband, Steve, of Tremont, Dot Closson of Bass Harbor and Sheila Ward and husband, Stanley, of Sullivan; grandchildren, Mike Conners, Christy Rumill, Brittany Carter, Adrienne Carter, Kenneth “Toad” Seavey and Nikita Seavey; “adopted granddaughter,” Alaina Brown; great-grandchildren, Chase Girard, Izak Miller and Maddie Matteson; “adopted kids,” David Case, Tina Lawson and Barbara Morse; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and special brother-in-law, Charles Stanley. A memorial service will take place 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Tremont Town Dock. Contributions to assist the family may be sent to Phyllis Carter, 917 Tremont Road, Seal Cove, ME 04674. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert.
