EAST MACHIAS – Lewis M. Huntley, 84, died Oct. 15, 2008, at an Ellsworth health care facility. He was born Oct. 30, 1923, in East Machias, the son of Newell W. and Bertha (Ackley) Huntley. Lewis was a graduate of Washington Academy, Class of 1942. He was a World War II veteran serving in the European Theatre and received the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon and Victory Medal. He was involved in the invasion of Normandy and Battle of the Bulge. He was a charter member and past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Machias, which helped to establish Machias Hospital. After his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1946, he partnered with his father in the family business, Huntley’s Wholesale, established in 1933. After his father’s passing, he continued to run the business up until three weeks ago, becoming well known as “The Candy Man.” He was a member and former deacon of First Baptist Church of East Machias. He joined Warren Lodge No. 2 in 1956, where he was a past master, member of Scottish Rite, York Bodies and Council. He was a 51-year member of Anah Temple in the past masters unit. He was also a member of American Legion No. 9, VFW No. 11533 of Machias and East Machias Historical Society. Lewis is survived by three sons and their families; son, Stephen Treat and wife, Jacquelyn, of Memphis, Tenn., and their children, Jana Morales, Melanie Plank, Justin Plank and Heather Bracco; son, Newell Huntley and wife, Kraisri, of Houston and their son, James Rose; and son, Edward Huntley and wife, Terri, of Surry and their daughter, Victoria. He is also survived by grandsons, Joshua and Adam Treat of Machias; as well as three great-grandchildren; cousin, Christine Small; niece, Marilyn Turner; and nephew, Frank Brockman. Lewis also loved his extended family and many lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Maxine; son, Richard Treat; brother, Newell W. Huntley Jr.; and sister, Rosemond Brockman. Calling hours will be held 9-11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Down East Baptist Church, Machias, with a funeral service 11 a.m. with Pastor Terry Swanson officiating.
