RAYMOND P. GETCHELL

MARSHFIELD – Raymond P. Getchell, 79, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at Down East Community Hospital, Machias, after a long illness. He was born Jan. 23, 1929, in Marshfield, the son of Fred H. and Dora (Hasty) Getchell. Raymond worked for E.G. MacLauchlan, Border Express and Coles Express, retiring from Teamsters Union Local No. 340 after 31 years. After his retirement, he drove a school bus for the town of Roque Bluffs for 17 years. Raymond served the town of Marshfield on the board of selectmen, planning board, school committee and fire department. He was a member of Marshfield Congregational Church and served as trustee and treasurer. He was past master of Harwood Lodge No. 91, Machias; past district deputy of the 3rd District; past high priest of Washington Chapter No. 16; St. Croix Council of Calais; and was a member of Blanquefort Commandery of Ellsworth. Raymond was also past patron of Machias Chapter No. 83 Order of the Eastern Star. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Abbie (Reynolds) Getchell of Marshfield; three daughters, Joan Getchell of Marshfield, Barbara McKinley and husband, James, of Acton and Alison and husband, Jean Savard, of East Machias; two granddaughters, Jennifer Savard-Johnson and husband, John Johnson, of North Monmouth and Marie Savard of East Machias; two great-grandsons, Richard Raymond and Tyler Mark Johnson of North Monmouth; many nieces and nephews. Raymond was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Willard, Norris and Fred Leland Getchell; and his sister, Virginia Kilton. At his request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be at Joseph Getchell Memorial Cemetery. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Marshfield Congregational Church.
