BANGOR – Maj. Robert M. Harper, U.S. Air Force, retired, died Sept. 24, 2008, in Connecticut. Robert was born Nov. 14, 1924, to William C. and Viola (Hall) Harper. He graduated from Bangor High School and aviation cadets. He spent 25 years in the U.S. Air Force, and served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam wars, and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, as well as several air medals. In Korea he flew jet fighters in combat. In Vietnam he flew smaller aircraft low over the jungle, dropping leaflets in psychological warfare. After retirement he built an ultralight aircraft that he flew up until one year prior to his death. He is survived by his wife, Dolores Morrill Harper; three children, Steven, Diana Angelino of Connecticut and Richard Harper of Texas; his brother, William Harper of Bangor; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew. He was a good man, husband and father, a brave warrior to his country and a superior pilot. He is missed. A military memorial service with honors is planned at a future date.
