LINCOLN and HOWLAND – In the morning hours of Nov. 6, 2008, Elwood Oakley Porter, 87, took his final horse ride. On the wings of Pegasus he rode into the arms of Jesus from Cummings Health Care Facility, Howland. He was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Lowell, the son of Clarence and Althea Porter. His childlike ways and love of animals won the hearts of most everyone he met. For the most part, he had a hard life working in the woods with his papa and brothers, yarding wood with horses and chopping wood with an axe. He loved horses, “pups” and fishing, and in his younger years could frequently be seen fishing on the banks of Mattanawcook Lake. He loved music and bingo, and won often at Cummings. His favorite TV show was the Dukes of Hazzard. He is survived by two sisters, Leola Curtis of Lincoln and Lenora Severance of Guilford, Conn.; his favorite niece, Adria; special nephew and niece, Clarence and Anne Cummings; two sisters-in-law, Axie Porter and Doris Porter; several nieces and nephews; and his extended family, the staff and residents of Cummings Healthcare Assisted Living. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers, Roy, Clinton, George, Willard and Page; and two sisters, Annie and Leona. A special thanks to Cummings nursing staff, Dr. Dumont and Dr. Metzler, while Elwood spent the last 10 years of his life at Cummings Assisted Living. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at Lowell Cemetery with the Rev. Donald Littlefield officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the activity fund at Cummings Healthcare Assisted Living or to a charity of choice. Arrangements with Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. For an online register book, please visit www.clayfuneralhome.com.
