AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine’s attorney general says a state trooper who fired three shots during the apprehension of a Mexico man was legally justified in using deadly force.
The episode unfolded after dark in the rain on June 28 when police found the suspect in a domestic disturbance on a remote logging road. State Trooper Jason Wing fired three shots from his rifle when the man’s pickup truck lurched toward troopers there to apprehend him.
The suspect, 51-year-old Lawrence Lapoint, escaped injury but submitted to arrest. The investigation found that all three shots hit the truck, one of them shattering the windshield.
