WINTER HARBOR – Oscar Hammond Young, 95, died peacefully Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at his home after a short illness. A lifelong resident of Winter Harbor, he was born there April 13, 1913, son of the late Fred S. and Ethel (Hammond) Young. Oscar was educated in Winter Harbor High School, graduating in 1931. He married Velma (Rand), July 20, 1941, in Winter Harbor. He was employed for several years at Beaconsfield Hotel, Brookline, Mass., and then worked for 12 years at Simplex Wire and Cable, Cambridge, Mass. After relocating back to Maine, he worked for A.R. Whitten and then for Winter Harbor Elementary School as a custodian, bus driver and a volunteer basketball and baseball coach. He referred to his players as “his boys,” winning many championships. About 1970, he was hired by the Grindstone Association to work as their golf pro and caddy master and lastly, as a golf superintendent retiring in 1989. He was their golf pro from 1957 to 2000 and he was their superintendent from 1971 to 1989. Oscar was an avid golfer and fan, and an avid Red Sox fan. He also enjoyed Louie Lamour Westerns and reading books. He shared 67 years of marriage with Velma (Rand) Young of Winter Harbor. In addition to his wife, family members include four sons, Thomas Young and wife, Diana, Fred Young and friend, Lavonne Kirkland, and Steve Young and wife, Stacie, all of Winter Harbor and Bruce Young and wife, Truth, of Birch Harbor; two grandchildren, Scott Young and wife, Sherie, of Winter Harbor, and Donna Young of Franklin; two great-grandchildren, Ethan R. Young of Winter Harbor, and Morgan Joy of Franklin; a sister-in-law, Beatrice (Rand) Bowling of Winter Harbor; and three nieces, Alfreda Bacon and Louise Shaw, both of Winter Harbor, and Judy Rayburn-Young of North Carolina. He will be sadly missed by a special friend, Harry Dixon. He was predeceased by three sisters, Martha Young, Minnie McLellan and Wrexie Young; by a nephew, Maurice Sargent; and by a brother-in-law, Gordon L. Rand. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Main Street, Milbridge. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Cemetery, Winter Harbor, with Pastor Bill Sommerville officiating.
