PRESQUE ISLE – Mildred Sutter Osborn, 91, died Nov. 28, 2008, in Union, from complications related to lung cancer. She was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Presque Isle, one of nine children to Edith Elvena Sutter and Leon Edgar Sutter. Having grown up on a potato farm during the Depression, she often remarked that she had one dress per year for summer and another for winter, but always enough to eat. She trained as a teacher at Presque Isle Normal School and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono. In 1943 Mildred married Everett Lee Osborn of Dodge Center, Minn., whom she met during World War II at a United Service Organizations function at Presque Isle Air Force Base. They lived in various locations during the war, but returned in 1945 to Presque Isle, where she lived until August 2008. While teaching English at Presque Isle High School for 32 years, she formed many lasting friendships with students. Her teaching ranged from the American masters to the modern detective story and science fiction. Mildred was an active member of the Maine Education Association, retired, for many years. An enthusiastic golfer, Mildred was a charter member of St. John Valley Senior Ladies Golfing Association and served for several years as treasurer of the Ladies Division of Presque Isle Country Club. She enjoyed attending and hosting the weekly bridge games, which provided enjoyment and support for the entire group. Mildred was a lifelong member of First Congregational Church, Presque Isle. She was a longtime member of the Eastern Star, for which she served in several honorary positions. Mildred was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Everett; and siblings, Madeline, Amber, Philip, Roger, James, Jean and Dorothy; and an infant brother. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Terri Osborn of Needham, Mass.; her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Raymond DeGrass of Rockport; grandchildren, Paige Osborn, Benjamin DeGrass and his wife, Carron, Eric DeGrass and Katherine DeGrass; plus five nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at First Congregational Church, Presque Isle.
