YARMOUTH – Meredith R. Whalen, 81, of Yarmouth and Bangor, died Nov. 29, 2008, with her loving family by her side at Brentwood Manor. She was born July 19, 1927, in Enfield, a daughter of Earl W. and Hazel R. Ludden Round. Meredith was educated in Lincoln schools and graduated from Lee Academy in 1945. She married Dwight C. Whalen in August 1983. Meredith was a self-employed beautician, working in Bangor area nursing homes. As an active volunteer at Eastern Maine Medical Center, she logged more than 5,000 service hours and she made thousands of teddy bears that were distributed to Bangor area police and medical services for children in crisis. Meredith enjoyed spending time at the ocean with her family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents of Enfield; her husband in 2006; and a son-in-law, Peter Shiro. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Shiro of Scarborough and Pam Caylor and her husband, Paul, of Kentucky; two sons, Bill Whitten and his wife, Barbara, of Yarmouth and Bruce Whitten of Florida; a sister, Elizabeth Leighton and her husband, Dick; a brother, David Round and his wife, Dottie, both of Enfield; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. At the family’s request, all services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to a charity of your choice.
