PENOBSCOT – George “Rosie” Paul Jenkins, 60, died Nov. 12, 2008, at home with his family present. He was born March 26, 1948, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of Harold and Alberta Babula Jenkins. Rosie was a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, Class of 1970, with a Bachelor of Science in nautical science. He was on the Maine Maritime Academy rowing, sailing, ice hockey and football teams. During his career, he shipped as chief mate for Mobil Oil, Apex Marine and Liberty Maritime. In 2003, he retired to his farm in Penobscot. Rosie loved cooking; he had a gourmet kitchen that made him famous among his friends and family. His worldwide collection of recipes and spices, which he shared generously, will continue to tempt our appetites for years to come. He loved fishing and hunting, taxidermy of fish, model shipbuilding, stained glass creations, gardening and spent 27 years raising, breeding, showing and racing Quarterhorses. Rosie participated for three years in the Maine State Oyster Eating Championship at Dennett’s Wharf, Castine. He was the champion in 1986 and 1987, with a record of 337 oysters in 20 minutes. Rosie is survived by his wife of 37 years, Judith B. Jenkins; his son, Jacob E. Jenkins and fiancee, Haley E. Steele; his granddaughter, Makallie Rose Jenkins, all of Penobscot; sister, Edith Searles and husband, Dennis; father, Harold; niece, Kim Colomb and husband, Ryan; and son, Connor; and nephew, Joshua Searles, all of Porter.
