OAKFIELD – Archie “Joe” Swallow, 82, died Dec. 2, 2008, in Houlton, with his family and friends at his side after a long battle with cancer. He was born April 7, 1926, in Oakfield, the son of Harry and Thursie (Parker) Swallow. Archie graduated from Oakfield High School and went into the Navy, serving during World War II. After returning he worked for Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, retiring after 41 years. Joe was an avid outdoorsman, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. Joe accumulated a lifetime of friendships. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie (Sullivan) Swallow of Oakfield; one son, Rodney and his wife, Norma Swallow, of Houlton; two grandsons, Mark and his wife, Mandy and their daughter, Abbie of Houlton and Chris and his fiancee, Jenna and their daughter, Aubrey of Hodgdon; four brothers, Donald “Pat” and his wife, Gloria Swallow, of Houlton, Lewis “Mike” Swallow and his wife, Mary Miller, Kenneth and his wife, Sida Swallow, and Halden Swallow, all of Oakfield; one sister, Laura “Sis” McLaughlin of Dyer Brook; one nephew, Donnie, who was raised by his grandparents, Harry and Thursie; as well as several other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, Robert H. Swallow. Friends may call 10 a.m.-noon Friday at Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls, where funeral services will be held at noon with the Revs. Donald Morton, Reggie Corey and Ian Tupper officating. Interment with full military honors will be at Oakfield Cemetery.
