BANGOR – Clarence E. Melvin, 86, died Dec. 2, 2008, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born March 24, 1922, in Bangor, the son of Clarence and Doris (Virgie) Melvin. He graduated from Bangor schools, worked in the family music store business and as an electrician at the University of Maine. Mel served as a forward observer during the Normandy invasion and was awarded the Bronze Star and numerous other awards while serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Elks and Eagles clubs and enjoyed outdoor activities including boating and four-wheeling. Mel is survived by three children, Michael Melvin and his wife, Jan, of California, Kathleen and her husband, Frank, from Massachusetts and Dennis Melvin and his wife, Debbie, of Hermon; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mel also leaves his faithful poodle, “Buddy” Melvin who has found a new family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Grace “Dody” (McCann) Melvin. They were married 37 years. Private graveside services will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
