OLD TOWN – Yvette C. Cormier, 85, passed away Dec. 8, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility. Yvette was born June 30, 1923, in Old Town, the daughter of Henry and Clara (Bouchard) Thibodeau. Yvette grew up on French Island in a loving family. She loved sports, which helped develop her competitive nature. As quoted in her high school yearbook “Liked by all, big and small, with a will and plenty of skill with a basketball.” She also enjoyed baseball and swimming, and was captain of her bowling team, still competing for that high score. A loving wife, she met her husband of 64 years, Ernie, while attending Central Welding School during World War II. She retired from the University of Maine – Orono, as an administrative assistant in the chemistry department. Yvette raised four children and was “Santa” to her grandchildren and great-grandsons. In political circles, she was known as “Mrs. Democrat.” Her commitment and dedication was acknowledged and appreciated at local, state and national levels. Throughout her life, Yvette was active in Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, Emblem Club, VFW and worked as a volunteer whenever needed; she fought for justice, labor issues, fair play and the American way. She was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed the Red Sox, Patriots, UMaine Black Bears and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Ernest; daughter, Karen Granville of Daytona Beach, Fla.; daughter, Kathryn Terranova of Greenville, N.C.; son, Gregory Cormier and his wife, Michelle, of Old Town; grandson, Kirk Granville of Daytona Beach, Fla.; granddaughter, Tricia Woolard of Greenville, N.C.; two great-grandsons, Benjamin Buzzell and Kevin Woolard of Greenville, N.C.; brother, Robert and wife, Marjorie Thibodeau, of Beach Hill; and her special felines, Brandy and Whisk. She was predeceased by son, Edward; sister and best friend, Blanche Treadwell; and brothers, Wilfred and Francis Thibodeau. A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Church. A reception will be held immediately after at Holy Family Parish Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post No. 3381 of Old Town. Services entrusted to the care of Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town.
