PARKMAN, Maine — The Charlotte White Center Angels will have something to wrap themselves in this winter, thanks to a Parkman woman.
Mary Stirniman Betts, a member of the Pine Tree Quilters Guild, made and donated 22 scrap quilts for the children and young adults who are served by the CWC’s angel program. CWC Angels is a community-based outreach program that works to improve the well-being of children and teenagers through projects designed to develop spirit, pride and personal responsibility.
Darleen Currier, coordinator of the angel program, said the holidays could be stressful for families, especially those facing financial hardships. To help lessen the stress, the program provides a small gift at Christmas to children and teenagers.
Betts said she had all kinds of scraps, some of which were given to her, so she decided to put the scraps together to benefit others. To help pay for the batting and backing, she received a grant from the guild.
It took about four months for Betts to construct the quilts, which are all different. “I believe in giving locally,” she said. “I don’t like to think about kids being cold.”
Currier, who picked up the quilts last week, said she was extremely pleased with the donation. In addition to a small gift, 22 of the children will receive one of Betts’ quilts, she said.
