GEORGETOWN, Mass., and CASTINE – John P. Bishop, 67, died unexpectedly Dec. 30, 2008, at his home in Georgetown, Mass. He was born Jan. 7, 1941, in Youngstown, Ohio, son of Elizabeth and Dr. Robert L. Bishop. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; and their three daughters, Amanda Bishop Becker, Jennifer Bishop Callahan and Kate Bishop Penney. He was the loving “Papo” to Ellie and Jack Becker and Molly Callahan. He is also survived by two brothers, Murry Bishop and James Bishop. He graduated from Boardman High School and continued on to graduate from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, Class of 1964, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. John began his career in the newspaper industry as a chemist with Great Northern Paper Co., Millinocket, and eventually moved on to Bangor Publishing Co. in 1970, where he spent the remainder of his career before retiring in 2003. He spent these years in Presque Isle and Hampden before moving to Castine, where he lived most recently. John P. Bishop was an exceptionally devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed the woods and waterways of Maine throughout his life through many fishing trips, a camp at Cross Lake and boating in Penobscot Bay. In Castine, he enjoyed giving tractor rides to his grandchildren and cooking lobster dinners at sunset. John Bishop’s love for his children and grandchildren was apparent to all who knew him. He will be missed by dear friends throughout the Aroostook and Penobscot areas. Visitors may call 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, 44 Kennebec Road, Hampden. Interment will be private in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, 158 Linwood Plaza No. 220, Fort Lee, NJ 07024.
